Clinical Ayurveda, Education & Professional Standards

Shaughn’s work in Ayurveda has focused on translating traditional Ayurvedic clinical knowledge into structured, responsible, and teachable systems for practice in Canada. His background includes Ayurvedic practitioner education in North America, yoga education in India, Panchakarma training, clinical internships in India and Canada, advanced Marma training, spa therapy development, and more than two decades of curriculum and treatment design.

At Samya Spa, his work helps shape the clinical reasoning, treatment frameworks, practitioner training, and professional standards behind Samya’s Ayurvedic services and the ingredient selection, formulations, manufacturing processes and retail product selction for Samya Spa shop’s products.

A Systems-Based Approach to Ayurveda

1. Assess

Shaughn begins by considering the whole pattern of the client’s presentation: constitution, current condition, digestion, sleep, stress, energy, tissue state, body tension, season, daily routine, and goals for care.

2. Interpret

Rather than only viewing concerns in isolation, Shaughn uses Ayurvedic clinical reasoning to understand how different signs and patterns relate to one another. This helps identify the broader functional picture behind the client’s current state.

3. Plan

Care is structured according to the individual. Recommendations may include Ayurvedic consultation guidance, herbal oil and paste therapies, Panchakarma support, Marma tharapy and massage, yoga, pranayama, meditation, daily and seasonal routines, and practical home care.

4. Apply

Treatments and recommendations are delivered within a clear professional scope and adapted to a contemporary Canadian practice setting. The goal is not simply to provide a service, but to create a coherent plan of care that clients can understand and realistically follow.

Building Samya Ayurveda’s Clinical Spa Model

Shaughn originally established Samya Ayurveda and began developing its first Ayurvedic spa therapies, practitioner training materials, and product lines in the early 2000s. This early work included the formulation of Ayurvedic teas, herbal oils, professional products, treatment applications, and practical spa protocols for use at the Salt Spring Spa Resort.

As Samya Ayurveda expanded, these treatments, products, and training systems were further refined and developed in collaboration with Radhika Jenson and Dr. Dharmesh Kubendiran. Together, this work helped shape Samya’s clinical spa model: assessment-led Ayurvedic care, structured treatment planning, hands-on therapies, product knowledge, practitioner education, and the responsible adaptation of classical Ayurvedic principles to contemporary Canadian practice.

At Samya Spa today, this foundation continues to inform the way Ayurvedic consultations, herbal oil and paste therapies, marma therapy, ayurvedic massage, client education, and therapist training are approached.

Shaughn is Core Faculty at the Ayurveda College of British Columbia and serves on the Board of Directors and Advisory Board of the Ayurveda Association of British Columbia.
